Pediatric primary care providers are often the first and most consistent medical professionals children see as they grow up. Having a primary care provider starting at birth is key to good health. In addition primary care providers guide parents on routine health care such as immunizations, conduct sports and annual physicals, and offer information on development, nutrition, growth patterns and more. When necessary, they refer children to medical specialists for additional care. By scheduling well-child visits and annual physicals, patients/parents  develop a relationship with their provider. This relationship can help the provider to know a patient’s health history and to determine what is normal or abnormal  regarding his or her health. In the event of minor injury (such as a sprain or cut) or acute illness (such as the flu or fever), primary care providers deliver timely and often same-day care, and they can prescribe medication or further treatment. Having a primary care provider is crucial in the management of chronic conditions.
