ADOS-2 Diagnostic Evaluation
Understanding the ADOS-2
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a structured evaluation conducted by professional clinicians to examine communicative abilities, social interactions, and creative use of materials in individuals suspected of having autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The ADOS-2 was created by Dr. Catherine Lord and her associates to facilitate the consistent observation of symptoms and behaviors related to ASD across many clients, providers, and settings. The ADOS-2 is presently regarded as the "gold standard" for assessing ASD.
The ADOS-2 is intended for persons ranging from 12 months to adulthood. The ADOS-2 necessitates a minimum developmental level of 12 months and the absence of substantial sensory or motor impairments (e.g., blindness, deafness, wheelchair confinement) for persons to participate well in the examination.
The ADOS-2 is designed to accommodate individuals throughout their lifespan, as it consists of multiple modules. Clinicians choose the suitable module for an individual depending on their language proficiency (from non-verbal to verbally proficient) and age.

What to expect at Children Express Care Clinic
At CECC, the ADOS-2 is utilized as a component of a thorough assessment. Additional components consists of an interview with the parent/guradian to collect information regarding the individual's birth, medical and developmental history, current symptoms, and concerns, alongside standardized assessments completed by parents, teachers, and other pertinent informants. A comprehensive evaluation will be conducted in a single appointment.
In terms of what to expect with the ADOS-2, the assessment take about 60 minutes for a clinician to administer. Clients are typically scheduled with a clinician with whom they have little to no familiarity to obtain a sample of the client’s behavior that is not influenced by previous interactions. When toddlers or children are being assessed, the parent may be asked to be present in the room for the entire administration. A parent’s primary role is to simply observe, although the clinician may ask the parent to interact with the child in specific ways at certain points during the ADOS-2. For adolescents and adults, the ADOS-2 is typically administered with only the client and clinician in the room
When will results be available?
The results of the evaluation will be completed within 1-2 weeks after the comprehensive evaluation. A follow up appointment will be scheduled the same day as initial evaluation to receive results.

**While the ADOS-2 is regarded as the "gold standard" for ASD evaluation, it is crucial to recognize that it constitutes merely one piece of information and is insufficient alone for diagnosing ASD. The ADOS-2 must consistently be included in a thorough examination that takes into account an individual's developmental history, insights from parents and other significant informants, behavioral observations during and outside the ADOS-2 administration, and the assessments of seasoned clinicians.**
